Get a Grip on Success: How This Photographer Built an Empire for the past 7 years
COMPANY: ISAACSIMPHOTO
ISAAC SIM
We met Isaac by coincidence as our mutual friend was an army friend of his and he has requested to customise his company's logo for his grip. We believe that every person has a story behind the grip and here is Isaac's story as a Singaporean living in Canada as a photographer!
Q1. What is behind this company logo?
I live in a country (Vancouver, Canada) where there's a lot of nature, a lot of mountains, trees and ocean. The cabin is actually something that I wanted to build in the future and potentially retire in.
Q2. How did you get into this industry? How did you get started and Why wedding photography?
Initially I didn't like taking photos at all nor did I like the ideas of weddings in general but it was until 8 years ago where I work for this photography studio that deals with mostly graduation photos. One of my ex-leaders was in a wedding party of his friends wedding and he wanted someone to take photos of his friends wedding, so he asked me to do a wedding photography. Back then, I had no experience in wedding photography or wedding industry at all and from that wedding photoshoot which was about 16 hours a day, it was quite an interesting field to explore. I just wanted to try it out and it's been five years now.
Q3. What was the first camera you purchased?
It was 15 years ago, my first camera was a Canon T3I and it was a basic beginners camera that came out long ago.
Q4. What was the most memorable wedding photoshoot that you've been to?
Most memorable was a wedding that I least expected it to happen. There was this wedding where I was preparing for family photos, just to get everyone together and to get up, they were just hanging out with the Bride's grandma who had Dimentia. They were just checking with her and at one point her grandma held the bride's hand and they were talking about the ring and if I remember correctly, one the of rings that the bride was wearing belongs to her grandmother and then I think the bride was like sobbing, it was such a precious moment.
At first I wasn't taking photos because I was trying to get everyone together but after I saw the interactions and realised this is what I have to do, to capture these moments.Once I got the photos taken, I felt like so emotional and I need to step back to cry a lil bit and went back to work. I think that was one of my favourite memorable experience.
Q5. Can you share with us your Tagline that you've lived up today?
TAKE RISK , I wasn't taking risk and I never understood what that meant until I actually took some risk. So I see Failure as like a part of Success. Just being able to take the risk allows you to see like what you're good in and what you're bad at. So from there you can set aside the bad stuff and then work on the good side of yourselves.
Q6. What advice would you give to those just starting out?
The few that I can think of is always be willing to learn, education is key, learn from other people, learn from other businesses and at the end of the day, you're running a business and it's not so much about the art you do anymore. It's still important but learning how to run a business is equivalent if not more important the the craft itself. Also, learn your own gear, be familiarised with your own equipment and be the master at it. Networking, network with as many people as you can, be in the industry or outside.
Learn from people that are already successful, learn from people who makes a lot of mistakes because that was something I did not do. I did everything myself and I said no to so many opportunities where it cost me a lot of money that I could have made if I have had taken those opportunities. I would have learned so much more and faster and I would be at my stage right now, earlier.
Q7. Can you show us some Photography Tips!
For starters you want to EXPOSE the picture to the right exposure. It's better to underexposed than to overexposed so that you'll be able to keep the details of the photo itself. The iPhone and Camera would have this line and Grid system, check at like these points and Focus on the object.
Sometimes you want to be minimalist, you just put it in the center and an extra step is to create more DEPTH and what that means is if we turn it over here, the background itself is a depth. The back is going to be blurred and the object is focused.
Besides that, you can also have something like the FOREGROUND like the object at the back and you have the blur in the front.
3 TIPS TO TAKE A PHOTO!
- Expose your Picture
- Create Depth
- Focus on Foreground
